    1.
Millions of millions of bacteria inhabit the intestine

Over a period of thousands of years a marked symbiosis has developed between man and his immediate environment. The high point of this co-existence is to be found in the variegated microbial composition of the intestinal microflora. The intestine is the largest human organ in its immune system, having a total surface area of some 400 m˛ - this being roughly the area of two tennis courts. It is populated with some hundred million millions (100,000,000,000,000) of the most different bacteria. In terms of numbers, they outnumber the body's own cells several times. One group of these bacteria that is very important for the maintenance of human health is that of the lactic acid bacteria.

    2.
Lactic acid bacteria - multi-talented regulators of the ecological balance of the intestinal microflora

A large part of the physiological intestinal microflora is made up of microaerophylic and anaerobic lactic acid bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria are gram-positive microorganisms which - as a rule - exist under conditions in which there is only a low amount of or no oxygen. Optimal growth is achieved at high CO2 concentrations. In the natural course of events they exist as colonies of physiological germs in large parts of the human digestive tract. Lactic acid bacteria are multi-talented entities, able to carry out the most different tasks essential for maintaining the body's health.

    3. Tasks of the lactic acid bacteria
  1. Production of lactic acid and acetic acid, which together keep the content of the intestine stable in its original slightly acid state
  2. Supporting of the natural barrier function of the intestine
  3. Production of hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen peroxide which - as microbiocidal substances - maintain the equilibrium within the microflora of the intestine.
  4. Formation of short chain fatty acids with the aid of which intestinal mobility is stimulated and the digestive processes supported.
  5. Important nutritional-physiological contribution to the maintenance of human health through the formation of vitamin B12.

    4. Disruptions are part of the daily run of things

As an eco-system, the intestinal microflora can be negatively influenced by a very wide range of different factors. These include:

    a) Medicaments that are taken (e.g. antibiotics, corticoids and purgatives).
    b) One-sided nutrition with industrially manufactured foods that are high in energy and low in roughage.
    c) Negative stress and tension, smoking and alcohol abuse.
    d) Poisoning of the body with pollutants from the environment.

As a consequence of the above, the number of useful lactic acid bacteria in the intestine can be severely decreased and the harmonious equilibrium of the microflora within is disrupted.

5.
New perspectives in the maintenance of healthy intestinal microflora

As nutritional supplements, the SymbioLact® products contain various cultures of lactic-acid-forming bacteria, which are matched to the different sections of the human intestine and which within these support the physiological intestinal microflora in the carrying out of their tasks.

7. Quality and product safety

Our SymbioLact® products are manufactured in accordance with the strictest criteria. Only stems, which are known to be capable of surviving passage through the stomach in a largely undamaged manner, are used. In this way it is ensured that the great majority of the bacteria taken in arrive in the intestine in a viable state. The risk that these lactic acid bacteria could increase resistance to antibiotics is excluded since they themselves have no resistance to antibiotics of medical relevance.

8. SymbioLact® - a contribution to daily nutrition

Many studies have shown that - when freeze-dried lactic acid bacteria are taken daily - the germs consumed can be detected in the faeces within 24 hours. After consumption of the product has ceased, these values sink back to their initial level. In order to achieve a long-term effect on the intestinal milieu, it is recommended that SymbioLact® products are taken over a period of several months.

For the well-being of health
